I create action plans for creating compelling visual experiences in Video Games and VR.
Artistically, 3D follows the same principles followed by artists over the centuries – creating a compelling visual experience requires the application of a mastery of a technique. At the same time, creating compelling art requires overcoming many technical challenges. Michelangelo for example was a master technician and an engineer and applied these skills very successfully in creating his masterpieces.
Techniques for creating compelling 3D experiences:
- Visual storytelling
- Stylized Reality
- Dramatic visual devices – Mood, Scale, Lighting, Sound
- Interactivity, Engagement and Immersion
- Flow
How is realtime 3D content different from other creative mediums? Realtime 3D platforms such as Video Games and VR are in essence simulations, could be of the real world, fictional or stylized reality- interactive, immersive, persistent, in full 3D, at 30 – 60 fps, 360 degree simulation. Unlike Photography and Movies, they can offer varied user experience with unlimited duration. And every single user experience can differ depending on user actions within the simulation.
Creating realtime 3D environments requires the convergence of many disciplines. It is a very collaborative endeavor, with different development tracks converging on screen. It takes millions of lines of code and a narrow bandwidth of computing resources.
